Ice Fishers in a Photo Essay

Carrying sleds full of drills, heaters, tents, fishing poles, and beer, ice fishers brave the ice out on Deer Creek Reservoir to fish. Some say they do it for sport, others to pass the time until spring comes. I went out a few times up to the lake to photograph the fishers and what they do best. These are some of my favorites from this season, and over the next few years I'm here I'll keep adding to my collection and perhaps come out with something nice over time.

Holga: Life Though a Plastic Lens

I was mildly retarded while trying to Holga and exposed most of the film.. and forgot to change the picture ratio thing on the back... and it's a Holga, it's just in itself unpredictable. But here are some favorites. All from Christmas break in San Antonio.

Freedom Festival

A few months ago, in the days in which it was warm and we rode bikes and bought lemonade from stands ran by little girls in South Provo, there was a 4th of July festival. I took this photo and have been working on it on and off ever since, trying new ways to make it look good because I really love how it feels. I also love how it's 48 outside so my front door is open to air out winter from our house because I want to pretend it is summer.

The Dominican Republic

Well, friends, I am off to the Dominican Republic. I know I say a lot of things and I know no one believes me, but I am for real about this. I bought a one way ticket yesterday morning for proof if you need to see it. I got an internship in Santo Domingo with The Dominican Today working as a photographer with an English speaking paper there. I'll be getting paid to hang out, brush up on my Spanish, and perhaps pick up some French while out on assignment in Haiti, and (if I'm lucky) hitch over to Cuba for a week of epic explorations. I got another internship in Colombia, but chose not to die, so I'm going to the DR insted. I leave May 4. Get ready for beautiful photos in a little over 2 months. Oh, and if you happen to know anyone there, let me know, I need a place to live.

First Prints

I got my first two prints I turned in for my black and white photography class today. These are some of the first prints I've ever done myself in the dark room, so it's quite exciting. The quality is off from the scanner I used, so don't hate. The motorcycle was taken at the Harley Davidson store and was an open-ended assignment. The second was a photo based on the principle of design: balance.
Also, as a side note, I just finished my application to the photo program here. About 120 apply and they take roughly 15. We'll see how I do.

Falling, take 2

So after looking at the first version of this print with my professor for a while, we tried to figure out what was wrong, why it wasn't working out the way I wanted it to and we came to the conclusion that it was because she wasn't falling through any space, just there akwardly. So here it is, I'm still not sold on it, but for now it'll do.

DancEnsemble: Dynamic Dialogue

Last Saturday I shot the DancEnsemble for their upcoming show. I threw out an idea and then Sam and Roxanne actually made it happen. We were able to shot in an old building converted into a studio, brought in a whole bunch of film lighting and a projector and went from there. If all goes well, I think the main poster will look something like this. Now would be a good time also to throw in a plug for the show, but I have no idea when and where and how much, so I guess you'll just have to wait.

I also did some individual and small group shots, and so, like most other posts I feel like I've done lately, it'll have to conclude with "more to come", for the day that I actually have time to edit all these photos.

Falling.

This is from a high key photoshoot I did in my living room for my black and white photography class, I originally wanted it to make it look like she was flying, but it kind of turned into falling. This is one of the test shots I did on my digital camera, I'm not sure if I pulled it off or not, but oh well.
